We enjoyed it so much last year, we're doing it again! We will be holding our 2012 off-road course on Monday, June 18, 2012, once again at the Massey farm in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, about 10 minutes' ride from our store. We will meet first at Morton's BMW, then ride as a group to the farm for a day of instruction, fun, and gettin' dirty! We'll be using some very qualified instructors of our own this time, headed up by Jack Heric. Jack is in charge of the MSF rider training for Germanna Community College, has taught many others to be rider coaches, instructed his fellow Marines in the art of off-road riding, and he's been through the BMW Performance Center off-road school in Greer, SC. Suffice to say, the man knows what he's doing. Since BMW is not offering financial support this time around, we need to charge for the training day, but we've kept it reasonable. Your $75 course fee covers the entire day's training, including lunch and ample amounts of water and other fluids. For those who learned with us last summer, the curriculum will be familiar, with one exception. Not only will we offer basic instruction as was done last time, but we'll also have a somewhat more challenging option for those with more advanced skills. Online registration is set up, and and you can access it right now. We hope to see you out at the farm come June! |
| IFRD was established to honor the women who ride motorcycles, and we're thrilled so many choose to ride BMWs from Morton's! On Saturday, May 5, we had a special offer just for the ladies. Spend $100 with us that day and we bought you a meal at My Place Latin Grill (right-click or Mac control-click to open in a new window). My Place is practically next door to our store and features a diverse menu of delicious meals made with care. |

It was another successful spring open house, as hundreds of BMW enthusiasts gathered to see and ride the new models, shop Vendor Row, talk to manufacturer reps, enjoy great food, and win fantastic door prizes! We were also proud to host the annual fundraising poker run for Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity. Your participation -- whether you went for the ride or just purchased a poker hand -- helps others to build their own homes. |

Members of the BMW Bikers of Metropolitan Washington, one of the largest local BMW clubs in the country, gathered at Morton's BMW on Saturday, March 10, for their monthly meeting. Club members were treated to wonderful ham biscuits made by our own Cindy Luck. If they went hungry, it wasn't our fault! There was a presentation by Jeff Massey, Steve Anderson, and Patrick Crawley regarding new bike models, current incentives, new products in the parts & accessories department, and Jeff's end-of-year motorcycle tour in Chile and Argentina. After the meeting ended, service manager Stuart Beatson (above) held a special tech session to explain the multi-point inspection process we use whenever a bike comes in for service or gets traded in to the sales department. All day, the members of BMWBMW and the Richmond BMW Riders took advantage of our second Club Day, which offers special savings to club members. |

And the winner is... Tim Willard from nearby Spotsylvania County, seen here receiving his Chili Champion gift basket from Jeff Massey! Congrats to Tim, and thanks to all of you who brought chili, helped us set up and manage the cook-off, and even those who just came and ate! Watch for more tasty events in the future! |

| It wasn't the best weather we've ever seen, but about a dozen hearty souls made it out to Natural Chimneys Regional Park and Campground in Augusta County, Virginia, on the weekend of September 23-25, 2011 for our first camp out. Once we got out there, the weather was actually pretty nice. The rain stopped on Friday around 4 pm, and held off until Sunday morning. Saturday was spent riding some of the better roads in the area, followed by a group dinner in Bridgewater on Saturday evening (above). |
| Each August, riders gather at Ironhorse Lodge in Stecoah, NC, for a Horizons Unlimited Travelers Meeting. Riders offer presentations on all sorts of adventures, participate in hands-on technical seminars, or simply enjoy the hospitality and location. The meeting is organized by Horizons Unlimited, and founders Grant and Susan Johnson, were on hand for the weekend. Morton's BMW Sales Manager Steve Anderson attended, as well, so if you want some first-hand info, check with him. We hope to see you there next year! |

If you watched the "Long Way 'Round" series, you no doubt remember the section where Ewan and Charley made their way across Siberia on a rugged road cut across the forbidding landscape. That was the infamous Road of Bones, built by slave labor under Soviet dictator Josef Stalin. When workers died, their bodies were dumped into the right of way and covered, hence the nickname for the road. Fast forward to 2010, when Compass Expeditions led a group aboard BMW GS models from London, England to Magadan, Russia, including the Road of Bones. Tour leader and company founder Mick McDonald of Compass Expeditions was here to share the incredible story of that trip. |
||
|
We were thrilled to welcome Grant and Susan Johnson, founders of Horizons Unlimited, who talked about their "Achievable Dream" series of videos and presentations. They explained how you -- yes, even you -- can do trips you might not imagine. Proper planning is essential, and they gave you a taste of what to expect. Susan also held a private, women-only session to discuss issues women face on the road. Then, Grant and Susan teamed up again to present the story of their eleven years traveling the world. It was a terrific, inspiring message of possibility and excitement for all. |

| It was July in central Pennsylvania. It was hot. No, more than that, it was brutally hot. But even with the heat indexes of 100+F, about 6,700 BMW enthusiasts gamely made a weekend of it at Bloomsburg, PA. The locals were wonderfully nice and welcoming, the roads in the area were very nice, and the MOA folks did a good job arranging things and trying to cope with the conditions. The GS Giant competition was a definite highlight, with GS riders from all over the country competing in a series of events for the best-in-show trophy. Next year, the rally moves to Sedalia, Missouri, and we're hoping cooler weather! |

We had a GREAT day of GS training at the Massey farm on July 15! Shawn and Lance Thomas of RawHyde did a terrific job leading the participants through a series of exercises and then, after our lunch, a trail ride through the woods. All of us at Morton's appreciate those who joined us for this event, and we encourage you to watch for more GS-oriented happenings both here and on our Facebook page. |

The 2011 Iron Butt Rally is history, and friends of Morton's BMW finished in the top ten! Roger Sinclair, riding a 2002 R 1150 GS Adventure in his second IBR, was among the leaders the entire rally and finished in 4th place! Kirsten Talken-Spaulding, riding a 2009 R 1200 RT in her rookie appearance in the IBR, put together an outstanding ride to finish in 6th as the highest-placed woman in the field! More than 40 guests gathered at Morton's on July 9 to celebrate their success. Congratulations Roger and Kirsten for showing us how to do the long ride! |

We hosted a presentation on Saturday, May 21, by the pros at RawHyde, an official BMW Training Center. Shawn Thomas, a RawHyde trainer, gave us the scoop on what they offer for training and guided rides -- the Continental Divide Ride got a lot of attention -- and gave us a preview of our hands-on training session planned for July 15. About 40 of us gathered to enjoy pizza, the presentation, conversation, and plans for many more GS events to come! |

We had more than a dozen entries in our 3rd annual Chili Cook-Off this year, and the scoring was tight! Eddie Lloyd (pictured receiving his gourmet gift basket from parts manager Patrick Crawley) won by one vote over Tim Parrott. One vote behind Tim was a four-way tie for third, with Patricia Verden, Pam Fisher, Stuart Beatson, and Patrick Callahan sharing the honors. With 45 votes cast, this was the closest judging we've ever had, so great job everybody! |

About 25 S 1000 RR enthusiasts turned out for an evening with Nate Kern and the new bike on Saturday, February 20. Nate gave a really solid presentation of the new technical features of the bike, explaining how and why BMW designed it the way they did. After the presentation, attendees had the chance to speak directly to Nate, our drag racer Domonic Anderson, service manager Stuart Beatson, and other Morton's staffers about the bike and its applications. And there was plenty of pizza for everyone! |

What could be better in the middle of winter, we asked, than a motorcycle rally? Given the usual January weather, we decided to hold a "rally" inside, and a couple hundred riders and friends decided to join us. In addition to some great sales on apparel and accessories, we offered up our our annual chili cook-off, featuring recipes from staff members and the pros at Hard Times Cafe. The audience favorite turned out to be produced by Kevin and Amanda Carmody. Kevin is one of our certified Master Technicians, and it appears he can fix more than just bikes! After warming up with chili, 50-60 attendees enjoyed a terrific presentation by one of the three American riders who captured the BMW GS Trophy in Tunisia in 2008. Jason Adams, who teamed up with Jim Stoddard and Brad Hendry to represent the USA in the competition, showed photos and told stories about his adventure. Thanks to everyone, including Jason, for coming and making this mid-winter event so successful! |

As a tribute to our troops, we had the very special red, white, and blue Motosport S 1000 RR -- the only one in the U.S. -- on display Wednesday and Thursday, Nov 11 & 12. Active military with ID got a special DVD and brochure FREE as a sign of our appreciation! Pictured at left, Charlottesville's Steve Fox, who gave us our first S 1000 RR deposit, sits on the Motosport bike, the same color he's getting. |

The Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series continued on Sunday, August 30 at Sandy Bottom, and David White piloted the Morton's BMW G450X to its second straight win (three wins in the last four races!) and fourth straight podium! He is now just two points from first place! |

David White was off like a shot at the start of the Race for Vision on Sunday, June 14, in King George. On a hot day and on a brutal course, David led early then fell back when anothr rider crashed in front of him, blocking his path. He fought back to capture third place, for his second podium in as many weeks. The Virginia Hare Scrambles folks will now take a break until August 16. Come August, we'll be back in the hunt for another championship for David and for Morton's BMW. |

David White took first place in the Tidewater 100 Senior A division on Sunday, June 7 at Ivor, Virginia. After a tough start, David took the lead on lap 2, then battled with points leader Eric Hytinen all the way to the end. Hytinen led laps 3 and 4, then David regained the lead and finished a commanding 26 seconds ahead of Hytinen. This was our first win of the season, and looks to be BMW's first win ever in Virginia Hare Scrambles competition. For all the race details, go to http://vchss.org. |

Nate Kern (top) rode his Morton's BMW-sponsored R1200S to a very close second in CCS ThunderBike and third in Michelin Pro ThunderBike. Steve Kennedy guided his F800ST to fourth place in Lightweight SuperSport, and fifth place in both Lightweight GP and Lightweight SuperBike competition. Nate also took time to honor wounded veterans of the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan on Sunday. A group of them was transported from Walter Reed Army Medical Center to watch the races, and Nate and the Morton's crew spent time with them during the Sunday raceing. |

David White, a seven-time hare scrambles champion in Virginia, continues his efforts aboard the Morton's BMW G450X in the Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles series. In the May 3 race near Martinsville, he slogged his way to an eighth place finish. While leading the race, he impacted a tree and went down, re-injuring his back. He managed to bring it home on a tough, wet, muddy day.
![]() |
David White had another challenging day of hare scrambles on Sunday, April 19. He quickly made his way to the front of the pack, and was leading the race by about ten seconds when he ran out of fuel on the last lap. A disappointing finish to be sure, but we're confident that, once we get a few kinks worked out, we'll be seeing him on the podium. Check back for more info on a group ride to the event, or get event details HERE. |

David White debuted the G450X against a large field of competitors at Oak Ridge Estates in Arrington, Virginia. In the first lap, he moved from near the back of the pack in his class to second place, and held that position until injuring his back on a jump. The bike performed well, and he had a good chance of victory, so we'll remain hopeful for the next race on April 19.

October 15 was a spectacular day of fun for the whole family!Between 650 and 700 riders of all types of bikes showed up for the 2005 Oktoberfest at Morton's BMW Motorcycles. On a perfect fall day, they enjoyed free German luncheon, live music, incredible door prizes, discounts on everything in the house, vendors, a book signing, and much more! Given the number of people who show, maybe we should stop calling these open houses and call them what they are -- BMW rallies! If you were here, you understand; if not, you missed a heck of a party!

| In October 2005, the staff of Morton's BMW plus some family and friends made a luncheon journey to Peaks of Otter Lodge on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The ride was our way of honoring Graham Jackson Fling, one of our motorcycle technicians, who passed away too soon in September. Graham's wife Linda joined us for what turned out to be a cool, foggy, and then rainy 300+ mile ride, but we all enjoyed the trip and the camaraderie. |

| Front row: Steve Anderson, Stuart Beatson, Sandra Beatson, Gerri Schilling. Middle row: Jeff Dunkle, Scott Arnold, Linda Fling, Kristine Keesecker, Andrew Beale, Kenn Keesecker. Back row: Jeff Massey, Carrie Seabrook, Sabrina Kulynych, Hannah Massey, Elyce Wieland, Stephanie Acheson, Pat Crawley. |

| It was a partly sunny, but rain-free, Sunday when 28 of us went on a 140+ mile ride through the rolling Piedmont of central Virginia. Starting at Morton's BMW, we headed southwest to Louisa, then north to Madison, where we stopped for a BBQ lunch at the Pig & Steak. After lunch, we rolled north to Sperryville, then east to Flint Hill and environs, before turning south to Bealeton and the Flying Circus. |
